I went to a Geekversity seminar today - it was about internet marketing and it was great! They started off with a really creative video presentation and continued with some incredibly useful and practical information - can't wait to apply it!

There's another one coming up in October, which you should definitely try to get into (I'm thinking of going again). Today, we began to learn about affiliate marketing and how to leverage various social media communication channels, and there's more great topics planned for tomorrow's agenda. Our homework assignment even has the potential to generate real money too!

Jay Lee appeared on ABC 13 for a segment on social networking . In the piece that aired on the 4:00 pm news Jay briefly explained the basics of Facebook and Twitter . ( GEEKOZ does not believe that the news bar items at the bottom of the picture are related to the interview ! )

ABOUT ME

I am a Baby Boomer . In previous lives , I have been a public servant , Real Estate Developer and Renovator , Investor and Webmaster and had a few of life’s dramas along the way , including Lung Cancer . I retired from the Army Reserve after 30 years a few years ago . I’m Australian based but have lived in the U.S.A. .

My affiliate based Internet income has been declining over the past six months . I have been looking for ways to reverse this trend .

SEMINAR

Last weekend , I attended a seminar run by Shaun Stenning and Sean Rasmussen ( “ Smart Online Profit Systems “ - SOPS ) in Sydney . I also met Wayne Mansfield ( “ WayneMansfield.com “ ) who was ranked 87 out of around 5,600,000 “ Twits “ on “ Twitter.com “ ( I think I am 5,999,999 , but working on it ) . Another new friend is Greg Vincent ( Website ) who shares my dislike of Australian Banking ethics .

The Seminar was FREE ( which appealed to my Presbyterianism ) and included several PowerPoint based handouts , the usual stationery , a variety of snacks ( including “ Freedo Frogs “ ) and drinks Saturday evening ( there are practical limits to my Presbyterianism ) .

Most importantly , there was unlimited access to the principals and the 300 + like minded attendees who mostly stayed to the end , despite the 20 hours involved . I liked the use of recent joiners of the SOPS Program as coaches .

TOPICS

Broadly the topics covered were Market Research , Search Engine Optimisation ( SEO ) , Generating Cash Flow , Affiliate Marketing , Social Media ( Networking ) , Traffic Trading , Generating Results , “ Taking It To Market “ and “ Putting It All Together “ . Depending on the topic , I variously ranked myself as " Master Geek " , " Geek ( Provisional ) " and " Geek in Training " . I felt that I had not wasted 20 hours of my life .

INTENTIONS

My plan is fairly simple , combine what I learnt on the weekend with what I already know and use on this Blog and my other Sites over the next six weeks .

TIME INVOLVEMENT

This project will be mostly full time for me as I wait for an operation on my lower spine . One BIG advantage of the Internet is that an business can be set up to more or less run itself and / or can be run from anywhere with a broadband connection . ( One of my sites stayed at over 1,000 visitors per day while I took a few months off ! )

CONCLUSION

I have decided to give what I learnt from SOPS my “ Best Shot “ so I will improve my cash flow to the point of being able to participate in the SOPS Program . This is not the best plan , it is a compromise , but such is life . I will use this time for so called “ Due Diligence “ , but I must say that Shaun Stenning has a very astute head on his 24 year old shoulders and I am attracted to his sense of business ethics . My first aim is to pick a few keywords for this Blog to outrank SOPS on Google , remembering that “ Old Age and Treachery will always beat Youth and Ability ! “ .

P.S. I do have several other passions , which I will try to not let intrude into this Blog . However , my Hit List includes Australian Banks who have benefited from Government guarantees , yet refuse to pass on interest rate reductions ( see : Banks-Suck ) . I am sure that these banks would like to charge Customers for the air they consume while they wait in their damned queues . Alright , 4 of the World’s remaining 8 AA credit rated banks are Australian , but we are all paying for these ratings ( The only AAA rated one , Rabobank is also here ) . Number 2 on the List is the Telco Telstra because of its abuse of Market Power and the stupidity of the previous Federal Government in selling off the wholesale side of the business . Broadband is a disgrace in Australia . Number 3 are Internet SPAMMERS / FRAUDSTERS . Number 4 is the present New South Wales State Government . Number 4 A is to ask why Australians have to pay the total cost of Digital TV Set Top Boxes when the U.S. Government provides coupons ?

A few GOOD THINGS , we have President Obama , Kevin 07 ( most times ) , ICC - International Criminal Court and President Obama .

P.P.S. The time I spend on my web sites depends , inter alia , on the income from the particular site . This is a polite way of saying “ BUY SOMETHING HERE ! “ . Blog Participation is also nice !

WHY DO THIS IN AUSTRALIA ?

Well , for many reasons , including mostly adequate financial regulation . Australia is better placed than most countries in the current economic crisis / depression / whoops . Australians have a tradition of inventing things ( including " Intellectual Property " ) to suit local needs . Many Australian Inventions are in use around the world , including Aircraft Flight Recorders ( the so called “ Black Box “ , which is coloured orange ) , Penicillin ( see Florey ) , Combine Harvesters , etc. . Australia has a higher percentage of Nobel Laureates than any other country . I predict that that the Australian based General Motors Holden will survive the GM crash . No , an Australian did not invent the Internet , because Dan Quayle and / or Al Gore already had !

THE CALL TO ARMS !

The World appears to have many problems . There is a time to fight and a time for peace . I believe this is a time to fight for what we stand for . I do not necessarily mean putting on soldier suits , but we do have to make a personal stand . Do not let the environment get put on the back burner , if it fails , we fail , no bailout , end of story . If fundamentalists challenge us we must respond intellectually and , if necessary , with force , where ever they may hide . Forget the current World economic problems and fix your own finances , this Blog will give you some suggestions . Show passion ! Make your WAR CRY : " I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore ! " ! ( Oh yes , these words were said by an Australian ! )
