WordPerfect Helpline

This is a true story from the WordPerfect helpline. Needless to say the help desk employee was fired: however, he/she is currently suing the WordPerfect organization for "Termination without Cause."

Actual dialog of a former WordPerfect Customer Support Employee: "Ridge Hall computer assistant; may I help you?" "Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect." "What sort of trouble?" "Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away." "Went away?" "They disappeared.""Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?" "Nothing." "Nothing?" "It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type." "Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?" "How do Itell?" "Can you see the c:prompt on the screen?" "What's a sea-prompt?" "Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?" "There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything I type." "Does your monitor have a power indicator?" "What's a monitor?" "It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?" "I don't know." "Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?" "Yes, I think so." "Great! Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it'splugged into the wall. "Yes, it is." "When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?" "No." "Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable." "Okay, here it is." "Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer." "I can't reach." "Uh huh. Well can you see if it is?" "No" "Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?" "Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle-it'sbecause it's dark." "Dark?" "Yes, the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window." "Well, turn on the office light then." "I can't." "No? Why not?" "Because there's a power outage." "A power....A power outage? Aha!

Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the box and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?" "Well, yes, I keep them in the closet.""Good! Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from.""Really? Is it that bad?" "Yes, I'm afraid it is." "Well, allright then, I suppose. What do I tell them?" "Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer!"

Blogging Basics From Technorati

What's a weblog ?

A weblog, or "blog", is a personal journal on the Web. Weblogs cover as many different topics, and express as many opinions, as there are people writing them. Some blogs are highly influential and have enormous readership, while others are mainly intended for a close circle of family and friends.

Why are blogs important ?

The power of weblogs is that they allow millions of people to easily publish their ideas, and millions more to comment on them. Blogs are a fluid, dynamic medium, more akin to a "conversation" than to a library — which is how the Web has often been described in the past. With an increasing number of people reading, writing, and commenting on blogs, the way we use the Web is shifting in a fundamental way. Instead of primarily being passive consumers of information, more and more Internet users are becoming active participants. Weblogs allow everyone to have a voice.

What are common misperceptions about weblogs ?

The main misconception about blogs is that they are only personal diaries. Weblogs come in all flavors, from personal journals that are mainly shared with close friends and family, to blogs with readership levels placing them in the league of mainstream media. Blog topics include political commentary, product reviews, scientific endeavors, and any area of information where people have a deep expertise and a desire to express it.

What is a blogger ?

A blogger is someone who writes a blog.

What is the blogosphere ?

Blogosphere is a word used to describe the online community of bloggers and their writings.

How is a weblog different from a website ?

A weblog is a website that is updated frequently, most often displaying its material in journal-like chronological dated entries or posts. Most blogs allow readers to post comments to your the post, and link from their blog to your posts using the permanlink URL or address. In a blog, the content can be published and syndicated separate from the formatting using an RSS feed. Readers can then subscribe to the feed to automatically receive updates.

What is a weblog post or entry ?

An entry, a post, or a posting, are the terms often used to refer to a specific article or commentary written by the blogger on his or her weblog.

What is a comment ?

Many weblogs allow readers to write a reaction to what was written in the blog entry. Comments can often be found directly following the blog entry.

What is RSS ?

RSS is a file format that allows anyone with a website — from large media companies to individual commentators — to easily "syndicate" their content, similar to how comic strips and popular columns are syndicated by their owners to hundreds of newspapers. Except that on the Web, the RSS syndication is usually free, and the content that is syndicated is often not the full entry, but excerpts and links back to the originating website. Technorati uses RSS to track updates to millions of blogs.

What is "syndication" ?

In traditional media, syndication is a way of making content (such as OpEd columns or cartoons) available to many media outlets to publish simultaneously, usually for a fee. In the world of weblogs syndication means making part of a website available for consumption in a specialized reader or for other sites to use and publish, often for free. The part of a site made available for such syndication is most often a "RSS newsfeed" that lets other tools and sites display some or all of the site's content with proper attributions and links to the original source.

How is RSS different from a blog ?

A blog is a website which usually includes current entries, comments, a "blogroll," and an archive. An RSS newsfeed is a way of representing a portion of that website.

What about an RSS search engine? Is that different from what Technorati does ?

Yes. RSS feeds are a subset of the World Live Web. An RSS search engine searches only content structured in specialized XML formats such as RSS and Atom but does not look at a site's HTML or other markup. Not all blogs have RSS feeds, and some sites that are not blogs (such as The New York Times or some online event calendars) do have RSS feeds. Many blogs only send out a small portion or summary of their full postings and leave the full postings on their sites as HTML. Technorati specializes in searching all blogs, not merely those with RSS feeds, and instead of only indexing the RSS feed (often the first few hundred words of an article), Technorati reads all of the HTML code in a blog posting, and also tracks all of the activity around a blog or post such as inbound and outbound links.

What's the relationship between blogging and journalism ?

Weblogs are different from traditional media. Bloggers tend to be more opinionated, niche-focused, and partisan than journalists, who strive for editorial objectivity. Blogs encourage dialog with readers, which is why many traditional journalists now also have blogs. The relationship between blogging and journalism can be characterized as symbiotic rather than competitive. Bloggers are often sources for journalists, and many blogs contain commentary and riffs on what journalists wrote that day. Frequently newsmakers use blogs to respond to what journalists write about them. And by linking to traditional media, weblogs can introduce new readers to journalists and their publications.

Are weblogs a business or a hobby ?

For most people, blogging is a hobby. For some, especially journalists, writers, and business and political leaders, writing blogs enhances their professional careers by giving their voices a broader audience and allowing more engaged contact with their readers, constituents, and customers. Some bloggers have readership numbers approaching that of big media and are able to earn income from their popularity.

What is a permalink ?

The homepages of most weblogs have several entries, or posts, listed on them. Because blogs tend to be frequently updated, articles you find on a weblog's homepage one day may not be there the next. A permalink is the permanent identifier to a specific weblog post or article. Bloggers love permalinks — they provide an easy way to capture specific references to posts or articles about which bloggers are writing.

Why is linking so important ?

( Technorati had a " whoops " and forgot to answer this question , but no doubt would have said that it is the best way of attracting visitors . )

Free Backlinks : How to Get to a Page Ranking of 3 or Over in 90 Days

Climbing to the top of the search engines is the goal of every home base business owner that owns a website. A well optimized website alone may help you achieve those goals if you are a niche market with little competition. On the other hand if your niche market is one shared by many marketers, you will have to prove to the search engines that you site has more relevance. The way to differentiate your business from the many on the internet is by creating high quality backlinks.

Many website owners are deterred from generating high quality backlinks to their website either from lack of time or lack of money. The truth is that creating thousands of backlinks does not have to be time consuming or costly. In fact there many ways to generate high Page backlinks to you website for free. Using the methods I am about to share with you will be able to generate a PR 3 ranking in 90 days or less.

The first thing you must do to create free backlinks is to join five forums related to your niche. Once you have joined five forums, make sure you make a least 10 post per day to each forum. Forums usually have a high ranking and they are indexed by the search engines. Furthermore, every one of your post will equal to a high quality backlinks as long as you make sure you include you website's url in you forum signature.

The next step you will need to take is to submit your website to as many directories you can that are relevant to your websites content. You can either submit your websites manually or you can use a submission service to speed up the process. In addition to the backlinks, you will also generate a great deal of traffic.

The third step will be to write three articles per week and submit your articles to fifty article directories every week. This method is one of the most effective, because once you submit your articles, chances are they will get picked up by other article directories creating even more backlinks to your website.

The fourth method is to post to one hundred social sites at least three times a week. There are hundreds of social networking websites like Digg, Sphinn, Stumble Upon and Mixx. These social web 2.0 sites have a high Google ranking and also can create a heap of traffic. I suggest posting to one hundred social networking and social bookmarking sites daily. To make the submission faster you should use a social bookmarking software to post to multiple sites at one time.

The final step is to submit your RSS feed to one hundred RSS directories. If you do not have an RSS feed for your website, you should look into creating one. RSS feeds are important in generating backlinks and traffic to your website. In the meantime you can substitute for not having an RSS feed by posting comments to blogs daily.

The steps provided will take you approximately 3 hours per day to complete, while establishing a PR 3 website will bring you tons of traffic from the search engines. You may also receive offers from advertisers to display their ads on your PR 3 website thus increasing your income dramatically.

419 ( Nigerian ) Scams

Today , I received an Email supposedly from OBAMA'S FOUNDATION , well enough is enough .
.
I am not going to go into what these scams are , this link will tell you , if you do not already know : Advance-fee fraud - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .
.
This is how they work :
.

( From : Combat Fraud )

.

Since these Emails are also SPAM , these links may be helpful :

.

FTC - SPAM - Home Page

How to Report Spam

Spam Links - spam reporting tools

.

Fake Internet sites appear in search results , most search engine providers have a page or Email address for reporting suspicious results , this is Google :

.

Google Report a Spam Result ( From a Google search result )
.

Now , if this is not enough , feel free to do a reverse Scam . I strongly suggest getting a web based Email account ( Yahoo , Hotmail , etc. ) before starting out . Forward the Scam Email to the new account , rejig the Email to hide the address it had been originally sent to ( which you replace with your new one ) to make it appear that it came directly to your new account . Another warning ; always check their Emails for viruses , particularly in images and attachments . The Reply Address shown in their Email will most likely be forged , so it may be necessary to look at the Header to see the real reply address . The fact that the Scam will only work if there is an address to reply to is the fraudster's great weakness . So reply first and then report the Email to the service provider to have the account shut down ( see http://www.abuse.net/ ) to prevent other recipients replying to it . Don't worry about having it disabled , London to a brick they will be back in touch with another address ( which you will also report when the charade is over ) .
.
Remember the main aim of this Blog is to discuss how to generate wealth from the Internet , so be sparing with you time . But , you will be helping combat this pest and blowing off steam at the same time .

95% of Blogs Abandoned !

" Douglas Quenqua reports in the NY Times that according to a 2008 survey only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days meaning that ' 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned , left to lie fallow on the Web , where they become public remnants of a dream -- or at least an ambition -- unfulfilled . ' Richard Jalichandra , chief executive of Technorati , said that at any given time there are 7 million to 10 million active blogs on the Internet , but it's probably between 50,000 and 100,000 blogs that are generating most of the page views .

' There's a joke within the blogging community that most blogs have an audience of one . '

Many people who think blogging is a fast path to financial independence also find themselves discouraged. ... "
.
Since most bloggers don't update their blogs , the ones that do get more attention from Google .

The problem is that most people lack the understanding of how to get the most out of their blogs and give up the second they don't make any type of an income .

I've been making good money with my blogs for the last three years however , mine are created to convert a certain product and the content is below the call to action for that product .

I've done a good bit of testing and have found that building a blog and loading it down with ads doesn't work .

However , creating a blog like a website with a call to action does .

Blogs , like websites , are a great way to make money but to make money with them they need to look and feel more like a websites and less like a billboard .

It's a lot easier to drive traffic to a blog than to a website but you have to know what to do with the traffic when it arrives . Just my two cents . ( By: janeth , Follow up comments : Web Pro World . )
.
.
Geekoz begs to differ !
.
The most effective marketing method is to use both a conventional Internet Site and a Blog and link back and forth . Doing this overcomes the main weaknesses of Blogs , navigation , limited formatting , etc. . Sites take longer to be ranked than Blogs . Using the Blog to promote new site material gets FREE SE ranking , sometimes as quickly as paying for it ! Cross promotion generates inbound links for both Site and Blog .

I know that this works because I have done it !
